Common bean is an annual plant with a branching herbaceous stem. It is very decorative both during flowering and at the time of fruiting. Depending on the variety, the beans reach a length of 5 to 25 cm. They also differ in the shape of the blades: it is both cylindrical and flattened, like a pea, and sword-shaped.

Since the mid-nineties of the last century, a sufficient number of varieties and hybrids of beans of domestic selection have been bred, there are also seeds of Dutch and German varieties on sale. All of them can be divided into three main groups: hulled or grain, semi-sugar and sugar or asparagus.

The shape of the beans is bush, semi-curling and curling. Bush plants are from 20 to 70 cm in height, semi-curly – no more than 1.5 meters, and the stems of curly forms reach a length of 5 m or more. Many choose bush varieties, they are usually more cold-resistant, precocious and compact. They are convenient to grow in a normal bed or, for example, along the planting of potatoes – no need to install special supports.

But curly beans also have their advantages. It is much more decorative, and it can be grown not in the garden, but in the garden and at the walls of the house, to wrap it with borders, terraces, balconies, to shade some areas. But we must remember: if you do not limit the growth of curly beans (pinch the top at a height of 2 m), the stems will stretch and stretch and the harvest will have to forget.

According to the terms of ripening, bean varieties are divided into early ripening (up to 65 days), middle-early (65-75 days), middle (75-85 days), middle-ripening (85-100 days) and late (more than 100 days).

Growing beans

It is a heat-loving and light-loving plant, but it is grown by sowing seeds directly into the soil in late May – early June. It is possible to establish more precisely time of planting of beans independently, it is sown simultaneously with cucumbers, that is when it is possible not to be afraid of frosts any more. Beans grow best on light, fertile, drained soil. Before planting in the bed make humus or compost. Bush beans are grown on ridges in three rows and planted in a checkerboard pattern. When sowing in the hole put two pre-soaked grains to a depth of 3-6 cm (depending on the mechanical composition of the soil, on the lungs – deeper). The distance between the holes – 20-30 cm, rows – 30-45 cm. Before sowing semi-curly and curly varieties of beans, you must install strong supports made of stakes or wooden slats (plastic and metal are not suitable, as the plant will not be able to “catch” them) 2–2.5 m high. Make a hole next to each support, in which 2 grains are placed to a depth of 5 cm. The distance between the holes is 15 cm. To give stability to the stems, the ascended sprouts are pruned. Shoots appear in 5-7 days, they are very sensitive to frost. At threat of cooling cover shoots with a spunbond or other covering material. Adult plants can withstand short-term light frosts. The optimum temperature for plant growth and development is 20–25 ° С. Caring for beans is regular weeding, watering (in hot dry weather) and loosening between rows. To minimize watering and weeding, the soil can be mulched. The beans (shovels) are harvested two to three weeks after flowering.
